Canoeing at Widgeon Creek

The scenic view of Widgeon Creek

A great way to explore the west coast outdoors on a summer’s day is to combine a canoe trip up the peaceful waterway of Widgeon Creek followed by a short hike to a series of waterfalls known as Widgeon Falls.

Your trip to Widgeon Creek starts about 1 hour and 15 minutes east of Vancouver at Grant Narrows along the shores of Pitt Lake in the community of Pitt Meadows. Ayla Canoes rents a variety of canoes and kayaks for the peaceful paddle up Widgeon Creek. It’s recommended that you leave from Vancouver fairly early in order to have enough time to enjoy your paddle and be able to hike and spend sometime at the waterfalls while being able to return the canoes on time.

Greek Day on Broadway Street Festival

Greek Day revelers on W Broadway

Greek Day revelers on W Broadway

I don’t know about your weekend, but I took in enough beer, skewered food and things made with filo dough to meet my caloric needs for a week. (Not that that will actually happen, of course.) Which is my way of saying: I went to the Greek Day on Broadway Street Festival Sunday.

(And, no, I didn’t even try for the loukoumades eating competition.)

Rio Tinto Dragon Boat Festival – Saturday & Sunday, June 20 & 21

Dragon boat racers past the finish line

Today I hauled myself out of bed earlier than usual (for a Saturday) so I could maximize my day at the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. Or, to put it another way: I didn’t want to miss a chance to gorge myself on festival food while absorbing the immensely-positive crowd vibes that make this amazing event a true community event.

Also: I like dragon boat races.

This is the 21st year for the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, and there are 180 dragon boat teams—formed by friends, work colleagues, and hundreds of every-day Vancouverites—in the competition. The races are broken down into different divisions and continue, one after another, throughout the day, beginning at 8am and running until about 5pm (the Festival continues until 6pm).

Exploring Denman Street – From English Bay Beach to Coal Harbour

The northern end of Denman Street

The northern end of Denman Street

When I was writing about the Top 5 Reasons to love English Bay Beach last week, I made Denman Street Reason #3. But Denman is more than just an adjunct to the beach; it’s a destination worth exploring all on its own.

A vital part of Vancouver’s West End, Denman Street is the last major north-south arterial before Stanley Park. Because of its proximity to the park, it’s the place to get skate and bike rentals for use in the park or along the famous Seawall. (You’ll find the bike/skate rental shops at Denman’s north end, near the junction of Denman and W Georgia Street.)
