Free Ice Skating in Downtown Vancouver

GE Plaza Ice Rink is under the dome at downtown Vancouver's Robson Square

Ice skating outdoors anywhere is a real treat, but ice skating outdoors in the centre of downtown Vancouver, surrounded by glittering holiday lights? That’s something truly special, and something we haven’t had for over ten years.

But now it’s back: November 23, 2009, was the grand (re)opening of the newly upgraded outdoor ice rink at Vancouver’s iconic Robson Square (temporarily renamed GE Plaza, in honour of GE’s contributions to the upgrade).

Vancouver Opera’s Golden Anniversary Season 2009-2010

Marriage of Figaro performed by Vancouver Opera

A couple of years ago, the Vancouver Opera (VO) performed one of my favourite operas, the ever-popular
La Bohème, and it was amazing. Ever since, I’ve been an enormous fan of the VO, and I’m thrilled for its Golden Anniversary Season 2009-2010.

Fifty years of Vancouver Opera is impressive, and the VO will celebrate their milestone with a season packed with popular classics, including Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and spectacular new works, like the highly-anticipated Nixon in China.

Don’t miss “Souvenirs” at Presentation House until Nov. 29

I took my own advice this weekend and waited out the monsoon in a matinee of “Souvenirs” at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver.

Turns out I got wet anyway since the brilliantly acted two-person show about an estranged father and daughter left me sniffling in my seat.

Produced by Vancouver’s Green Thumb Theatre, the play (written by local playwright Michele Riml and directed by Jennifer Brewin) is a tender and funny exploration of the emotional chasms that too often divide parents and children–and how they can begin to be crossed.

Family FUSE at Vancouver Art Gallery

For today and tomorrow only, November 21 – 22, the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) welcomes children under 12 free (when accompanied by an adult) to Family FUSE, one of the biggest kid-oriented art events in the country.

Family FUSE only happens three times a year, and this time the super event is all about the “Green World” of nature and how artists respond to it.

Kids and families get to participate in sound and animation workshops and collaborative art projects, watch films and live dances, and explore a gallery space that’s been transformed into a forest. Plus, just like monthly “adult” FUSE, everyone can tour the current VAG exhibits, too.

Family FUSE happens on Saturday, November 21 – Sunday, November 22, 2009. Regular admission for adults and seniors still applies.

Shopping in Chinatown

Gorgeous Chinese antiques at the chic Peking Lounge

In my post on Vancouver Chinatown’s historic sites, I mentioned how much I love shopping in Chinatown. It’s one of my favourite parts of the city to explore, whether I’m looking for gifts, window shopping, or have something specific in mind.

Chinatown is famous for its Chinese imports, which range from furniture and home wares, to fashion, art and prints, fine jewelry, toys, teas and medicines.
