Crowds at the Roxy Cabaret, downtown Vancouver

One of the best things about hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics is one that rarely gets mentioned: meeting people from all over the world everywhere you go, whether it’s at sporting events, on the Canada Line, or dancing next to you at the Roxy….

Given the centrality of downtown Vancouver—the hot spot for nightly Victory Ceremonies at BC Place, hockey games at Canada Hockey Place (GM Place), and the biggest 2010 Olympics party places—you can bet the downtown nightlife will be sizzling-hot, too.

The 2010 Olympics from an International Volunteer’s perspective: Part 1

The following post was contributed by Joyce, an Olympic volunteer who has traveled all the way from Scotland to volunteer in Whistler. You can read more about her on her personal blog http://olympicvolunteer.wordpress.com/

In the “Hello BC” commercial, Michael J Fox and Co are telling us that we have ‘got to be here’ in 2010. Well BC, I am here, I am finally back in the only part of the world I am drawn to on a regular basis. Hello Vancouver!!

I have watched the “You Gotta Be Here in 2010 – Super, Natural British Columbia” commercial so many times, and it never fails to give me goose bumps. It shows the British Columbia I know and love at its very best. This is my 23rd visit to Canada and my 10th time to Vancouver!

Rumble in the Jungle: Bloedel Conservatory Fundraising Gala January 30

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the upcoming closure (due to a budget shortfall) on April 30, 2010, of the Bloedel Floral Conservatory, the domed nature conservatory that sits atop Queen Elizabeth Park.

If you’re as upset about the impending closure as I am, you have a chance to do something fun and helpful this coming weekend: attend the Rumble in the Jungle fundraising gala on January 30, 2010.

Organized by the non-profit Friends of the Bloedel to raise funds to keep the Conservatory open, the Rumble in the Jungle gala will be a night to remember. Taking place at the Conservatory itself, 200 – 300 guests will enjoy jungle-themed food and drink, Tahitian fire dancers, live music from Vancouver musician Dal Richards, and “surprises galore”.

Tickets for Rumble in the Jungle are $125 each or $200 for a pair, and are available from Southlands Nursery, 655 Balaclava St. (604-261-6411), Bacci’s at 2788 Granville St. (604-733-4933) and Thomas Hobbs Florist, 2129 West 41st Ave. (604-261-5998).

For more information, call Terri Clark at 778-866-9875 or John Coupar at 604-818-2756, two of the event’s organizers.

LunarFest 2010

LunarFest Lantern Procession to celebrate the Lunar New Year

Running through February 28, 2010, the annual Vancouver LunarFest is a Lunar New Year celebration like no other: Get ready for more lanterns—thousands made by school children and artists—than you can imagine, plus awe-inspiring cultural programs and events, too.

Part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad multicultural arts festival, this year’s LunarFest is transforming downtown Vancouver’s Granville Street—between Georgia Street and Robson Street in the heart of downtown’s shopping district—into a sea of colour and light with the Lantern Forest and an open-air art exhibit of works from Canadian and Taiwanese artists.
