Holland Heineken House – the Party Place of 2010?

At every Olympic Games, there is always one House or Pavilion that has the unofficial honour of being named *the* party house of the Games.  In 2008 in Beijing, it  was Holland’s Heineken House. Less than one week into the 2010 Vancouver Games, and I am fairly confident in declaring that this reputation will remain intact.

The one downside for this downtown girl is it’s location – It is out at the Richmond O-Zone. Granted, that is only a short ride on the fantastic Canada Line. But the last Canada Line is reportedly before 1.00am and the House is open until 2.00am. Planning Fail. Someone should have thought of that. Free entry makes up for the location though!

Yes, the line-ups are long. We arrived before 5.00pm and were waiting for about half an hour. Some friends met us in there a few hours later and said they were waiting for about 90 minutes. However, one friend with a Dutch passport – was able to jump the line up completely. Also, if the Dutch win a medal, word is that if you are not already inside the venue don’t bother going as they will hold spots for members of the Dutch team (which is totally understandable in my opinion).

Once inside they have a massive area where you can buy swag – they even have Heineken Converse – at a price…. Most of the gear is a little overpriced, but it is a once in a lifetime chance to get your very own incredibly orange, somewhat ridiculous Heineken House Hat like this. And the swag is pretty expensive everywhere. They also have a fun interactive section. The staff were very patient with my goal to ram into as many things as possible while playing the Snowboard game (I am not very good……)

One thing to note: you need to fill up a “cash-card” which you can use to purchase anything (merchandise, beer and food). Some find it annoying, I actually preferred it. However, it did make tipping for drinks a little challenging as often I would just take the card.

Onto the all important Beer Garden. If you were hoping for a high-end sampling of Dutch food and drink – this is probably not the place for you! The Beer Garden is very low-key – only a small number of tables, with the rest of us either sitting or standing in the bleachers or on the floor of the arena. Simple food and beer is pretty much the order of the day at Heineken House. They did have wine as well. Fries with Dutch mayonnaise (like a mayo-mustard mix) were delish! As was something that was basically deep fried goodness … Broodje Kroket…. Don’t ask. Just eat.

Great atmosphere. There are big screens everywhere, showing the Dutch Olympic Broadcasting feed.  We were there for about 4 hours and everytime a Canadian came on, there was mad cheering.  I shudder (in a good way) to think of the insanity if a Dutch athlete wins Gold. Out of the Houses and Pavilions I have been to so far these Games, this one definitely has the most party potential. Just get there early, be prepared to wait, and wear Orange (of course).

Did you see any kids inside? My family is dutch and I am dying to go but may need to cart my 3 month old along. He’s chill but wondering if it would be weird…

    Hi Anne,

I don’t recall seeing any infants inside. But there were some kids around. My understanding is that kids are allowed in until 9.00pm.

    Good luck!

Do you happen to know how much the ridiculous hats were? Just trying to gauge whether it’s worth the wait to get one :)

    Your post is helpful! Thanks!

the hats are $15 – you can go all Dutch or buy one that has our maple leaf on it! Also, kids are welcome as i saw a number of strollers, and teens too!

Nice review, good to see you liked the house.
I’m from holland and visiting Vancouver for the Games. The mix of canadians and dutch makes for an amazing atmosphere. Sometimes it makes me wonder, who’s guest where….
Also compliments on Vancouver for hosting the games, it’s an experience of a lifetime…
