Now that my family has expanded to include our son (born in March), my partner and I are making that typical Vancouver move out of our awesomely-located, westside two-bedroom into a house of our own in East Van. In our case, the beloved neighbourhood we’re leaving is South Granville, the trendy, bustling shopping district that stretches from Granville Street Bridge to 16th Avenue, just south of downtown Vancouver.
So, in honour of my neighbourhood—which I will sorely miss and which will always be one of my very favourite spots in Vancouver—I thought I’d do a series of posts on all things South Granville, starting with the absolutely fabulous food.
South Granville is packed with high-quality restaurants, including two of the city’s most acclaimed eateries—West Restaurant and Vij’s—making it a must-visit for foodies.
Top 5 South Granville Restaurants
1. West Restaurant + Bar
Pricey but well worth it, West’s outstanding contemporary regional cuisine has earned it four consecutive wins as Restaurant of the Year by the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. Tip for diners: Don’t skip the exquisite cocktails!
Called one of the “finest Indian restaurants in the world” by The New York Times, Vij’s Indian-fusion cuisine is a local favourite and among the best in all of Vancouver. Tip for diners: Get there as early as possible—or as late as you can stand it—because Vij’s doesn’t take reservations and there’s always a long line!
3. Ouisi Bistro
Hearty and super-flavourful Creole and Cajun fare make Ouisi relatively unique among Vancouver restaurants—Creole isn’t that common here. Ouisi’s has a lovely, low-key, jazz-y vibe, too, making it a perfect venue for live music during the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Tip for diners: Try the alligator!
4. Red Door Pan Asian Grill
With its communal plates—perfect for sharing—and its very reasonable prices (communal entrees are about $15), the Red Door is an ideal place to gather with friends and family or for a happy-hour drink and appetizer. Tip for diners: Don’t miss the lettuce wraps—they’re divine!
5. CRU Restaurant
The epitome of romantic elegance, this little bistro is the place for oenophiles: its wine and food pairings have garnered international acclaim. Tip for diners: Don’t miss CRU’s special holiday brunches, including Easter and Mother’s Day.
