The USA wowed crowds at English Bay earlier in the week with the first installment of the Celebration of Light fireworks competition. Next up is Spain, which is set to light up the sky on Saturday (July 24). Here are the important facts for anyone planning to go:
Location: English Bay (The beach itself is the best spot for viewing. But if you can’t stand the crowds, consider Kits Beach, Second Beach and even Ambleside or Dundarave in West Vancouver).
Time: Fireworks start at 10 p.m. sharp and last for exactly 25 minutes.
Road Closures: Mass transit, walking and biking are the best options, as pretty much the entire West End is closed to traffic during the fireworks. See the City of Vancouver site for full details.
Tips: The Vancouver Sun has been running a great series on the fireworks. Here are a few tips culled from recent issues of the paper.
- Arrive early to stake out a good spot on the beach or hillside above English Bay.
- Pack a picnic (or pick up a pre-made basket at Whole Foods or Capers) so you don’t go hungry while waiting.
- For photographers, bring a tripod! It’s impossible to take decent fireworks photos without one.
And if you can’t make the Saturday show, there are still two more shows left after that: Wed., July 28 (Mexico); and Sat. July 31 (China).
