Labour Day weekend is one of the biggest sales events of the year. Anywhere you go to shop in Vancouver this weekend—from small boutiques to brand name stores, from fashion to electronics to furniture—there will be huge sales. Labour Day is the time for summer clearances and back-to-school sales, and that’s as true south of the border as it is here in Vancouver.
If you’re staying in Vancouver for the weekend, you can best capitalize on the sales by heading to the big shopping centres. For fashion and gifts, head to Robson Street and Pacific Centre downtown, to The Bay department store (where they’re having a 75% off summer clearance), or take the SkyTrain to Metropolis at Metrotown (the largest mall in B.C.).
For electronics, school supplies and furniture, head to any big chain store—Best Buy, Sears, Canadian Tire—they’re all having Labour Day sales right now. For specific deals, you can check out the flyers at Flyerland.ca or RedFlagDeals.
Of course, a huge number of Vancouverites and visitors will be heading a little farther away to do their bargain shopping: south of the border into Washington State. You easily visit Seattle via the scenic Amtrak Cascades train or by bus; both deposit you in downtown Seattle, where the buses to and from the shopping areas are free. Another option: Quick Shuttle bus offers direct service to the Seattle Premium Outlet mall in Tulalip.
By car, you can make it to Bellingham—and visit the big chain discount stores like Fred Meyer and Target—in under two hours from dowtown Vancouver. Of course, that time estimate doesn’t include border-wait times. On long weekends, the border crossings can be lengthy; check wait-times before you leave. (And make sure you know how much you can bring back through customs.)
