This Canyon Will Light You Up

The warm glow of over 250,000 colourful lights is waiting for you to be experienced this holiday season at one of Vancouver’s top attractions, the Capilano Suspension Bridge!

Walking at night across a suspension bridge high above a rushing river, and within the treetops of a lush forest, could be considered to some a leap of faith; it feels like there are only white lights there to guide you.  As I crossed the bridge, the thrill of this adventure could be felt from groups of family and friends, children and adults alike as they passed by.

Let’s cross the bridge together, shall we?

As well as this main attraction, there are lots of festive activities to enjoy!

There are beautifully decorated life-size picture frames to take a holiday family portrait with. I took one of the Morse family from North Vancouver; Scott, Rebecca and their sons Seth and Nate.

Your kids can decorate a gingerbread man or colour their own tree ornaments. Sheena Watson from North Vancouver missed the gingerbread target and instead of Jack Frost, ended up with candy on her nose.

Besides grabbing a hot chocolate, you can also warm up by watching Malcolm MacFayden create ornaments with his glass-blowing demonstrations. Here’s a sneak peak at the process.

There is also a band performing every evening at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Most of these performers, as well as being staff members, are also local musicians studying music at Greater Vancouver post secondary schools. I know this because my brother, Joey, was one of the Capilano music singers for a number of years while he was enrolled in the music program at University of British Columbia.

Canyon Lights is on display now until Jan. 2, 2011 (closed on Dec. 25) from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. The cost for adults is $15, children (6-12) is $5. There is also a family rate, $35 for a family of four (2 adults & 2 kids).
