New Year’s Resolutions over Bagels

Benny's Bagels

As New Year’s Eve approaches, like many, I have been thinking about the past year and wondering what’s ahead. I’m not one for resolutions unless they naturally present themselves, but I am a big fan of living a self-examined life, so it didn’t hurt to think about one for myself. I came up short of resolutions I could fully commit to. I do however have a pretty good idea of what Vancouver’s resolution might be: to continue working at becoming one of the greenest cities in the world.

While I was working from Benny Bagels on Wednesday this week, I found myself being curious about people’s resolutions at the table next to me. Benny Bagels is a very popular and historic café in neighborhood of Kitsilano; it’s always full of students who are studying, professionals who are working, moms watching their kids and seniors reading the paper. Along with their bagels, the café is known for its artsy vibe, sandwiches, great music, cheep beer and my personal favorite, a gargoyle statue.

After asking the people at the table next to me what their resolutions were, it’s no surprise many hadn’t thought about it. So I decided to leave a sheet of paper at Benny’s Bagels all day until it closed with two questions on it: What is your New Year’s resolution and what won’t be your New Year’s resolution?

Aida Tribinevicius and Sam Davidson

Before I left I asked Benny Bagel’s employees what their resolutions were; Aida Tribinevicius’s is to “eat more vegetables” and Sam Davidson’s is to “embrace his inner nerd”. I plan on bringing Aida a carrot and Sam some sort of Star Wars nick-nack next week.

At the end of the day, there was quite a long list. Here are some of people’s responses:

What is your New Year’s resolution?

Be lazy more often

Be more appreciative

Enjoy the present

Put together a band

Lose post baby fat

To not lose sight of myself

Sign up for deep water aquafit classes

Get to the Amazon Rainforest and see a black panther

Quit my crappy job

What won’t be your New Year’s resolution?

I won’t stop drinking coffee

I won’t quit Facebook

I won’t be like Tim

I won’t stop eating bagels at work

I will continue to shamelessly watch reality TV

So I ask you, what will and won’t be your New Year’s Resolution? I’d love to hear them!

Happy New Year!
