3D Me, Baby

Science World at Telus World of Science is not just for kids!

Without a major exhibit showing and with major renovations underway, Science World is still a great way for moms and dads to get a break and wear out the younger kids with hands-on activities across three floors of displays. A favourite for our group was the ‘Origami for Japan’ fundraiser, where thousands of cranes were being folded to be sent to the stricken areas in the northern part of the country.

Plus, in recognition of the inconvenience of the construction, youth and adults only pay child rates on admission.

But the best reason of all to visit Science World right now is the OMNIMAX Theatre and the 45 minute 3D IMAX presentation, “Hubble”. ( Click here for a great interactive view of the Hubble, along with mission and crew information from its launch into space to today. )

Our group of six comprised two 10-year olds, two 15-year olds and two of us old enough not to disclose our age, and all of us were equally stunned by this film. The Theatre bills this film as one the will “Change Your View of the Universe”, and it does.

Whether you’re a space geek, an artist or collector of exceptional visual memories, or a spiritual person or just like interesting facts, this movie is for you. The kids were stunned into silence (that’s saying something), and I will admit to encountering a spiritual experience while absorbing this gorgeous film. The narration by actor Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent, accustomed as I was to associating space with Tom Hank’s unique narrative qualities. DiCaprio’s voice was perfect as Hubble’s cameras tracked into star nurseries to illuminate newly forming stars and even young galaxies.

The Hubble Telescope has to be one of the greatest marvels of our generation, and is on its last journey in serving humanity recording images of the universe 15 billion light years from earth.

This film, using stunning 3D techniques and astrophysical simulations, achieves a truly magical journey into the universe that will trip you out, fire you up, and leave the kids slack-jawed with wonder.
