As far as I can tell, Dare You seems to be an odd combination of Fear Factor and American Idol, with a little bit of Let’s Make a Deal thrown in. The basic premise is that people pledge money for you to do odd/humiliating/uncomfortable things on stage in front of a big group of strangers. The money pledged then goes to support the local Vancouver art scene.
According to the Dare You website, dares can come in a bewildering variety of forms. There are performance-based dares, like doing a dramatic reading from Snooki’s new novel, A Shore Thing. There are physical dares, like eating an entire habanero pepper on stage. There are grooming dares, like getting your head shaved. And then there are the “miscellaneous dares,” including having spiders and snakes crawling all over your body.
If you check out the website, you’ll notice that several dares have already been lined up for Thursday night. Perhaps the most interesting is a dare to be performed by someone named Yumi Mooney. Yumi has agreed to do a song and dance performance of Rebecca Black’s YouTube hit song Friday. No word yet on whether she’ll recreate the moonlight convertible scene.
The event will be hosted by CTV weatherman Marke Driesschen. If you’re interested in getting onstage and accepting dares, you can sign up on the Dare You website. Alternately, if you’d like to dare someone else to do something, you can also pledge money toward the dare on the site. For a dare to be performed onstage, a total of $400 must be collected.
Funds raised are used to support Pi Theatre and The Vancouver TheatreSports League, two local groups with a long history of supporting independent and alternative theatre and comedy in the city. The show starts at 6:45 p.m. on April 14 at The Improv Centre on Granville Island. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here.
