Vancouver’s City of Bhangra Festival 2011

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, the annual City of Bhangra Festival brings nine days of “drums, dance and discussion” to Vancouver from May 4 – 14, 2011.

The 2011 City of Bhangra Festival has something for everyone, with both ticketed and free events that showcase the art of Punjabi folk dance, the history and cultural impact of Bhangra in Vancouver, as well as multicultural performances that feature Bhangra-infused music from around the world.

Free festival events include Downtown Bhangra on May 13, on the grounds of the Vancouver Art Gallery, where 200 performers show off their talents, ranging from dhol drummers, beat-boxers and singers to Bhangra dancers, break dancers and a host of cultural mashups.

Also not to be missed is the annual Coast Capital Bhangra Competition on May 14 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Ranked as one of the most prominent competitive Bhangra events in North America, thousands come to this show to watch Bhangra teams from all over the continent compete for $10,000 in prizes. Tickets are $25 – $45.
