One thing you have to love about summer in Vancouver: there are so many free things to do! There are the free kids’ water parks at Granville Island and in Stanley Park, free music concerts, free outdoor movies, and now there’s free salsa dancing, too, every Sunday from July 3 – August 28.
Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square is an annual series of free outdoor salsa dances held at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver (across from the Vancouver Art Gallery). The dances are open to everyone—regardless of skill level—and include free lessons, salsa performances, and social dancing throughout the afternoon.
Organized by Salsa Vancouver, each Sunday Afternoon Salsa event begins with free beginner salsa lessons from 3pm -3:30pm, taught by top Vancouver salsa instructors, followed by dance demonstrations at 5pm from many of Vancouver’s best salsa dancers.
Along with the dance demonstrations, there’s open “social dancing” from 3:30pm – 7pm. In previous years, hundreds of Vancouverites of all ages and from all backgrounds have joined in the fun, salsa dancing the afternoon away.
If you’ve ever been to a salsa event before, you know its much more relaxed and social than, say, dancing at a night club. Everyone asks everyone else to dance, making it easy to meet new people, and even the most skillful salsa dancers are kind to beginners, even the ones with two left feet. (I know; I’m a terrible dancer but I’ve always been treated with joyful patience by the better dancers at the salsa events I’ve attended.)
If you’ve ever wondered about salsa, the free Sunday Afternoon Salsa events are the perfect way to try it out. And if you’re already salsa-proficient, take advantage of the chance to dance for free in one of downtown Vancouver’s most iconic spaces.
Sunday Afternoon Salsa in Robson Square happens every Sunday from July 3 – August 28, 2011.
