This Week’s Featured Vancouverite: Stephen Hui

Hometown: Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam, British Columbia.

How long have you been a Vancouverite?
I was born in Vancouver, grew up in Burnaby and Coquitlam, and briefly resided in Port Moody. After living in Toronto for a few years, I gladly came back to Vancouver. So, I’ve always been a Vancouverite.

Occupation:
As the web editor and technology editor at the Georgia Straight, I cover news and tech, edit our website, deal with community contributors, and coordinate our social-media efforts.

Favourite place in the city:
From the viewpoint above Siwash Rock, you can study Stanley Park’s sea stack, look down at the seawall, and soak in the view of Burrard Inlet. If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself alone on the former army searchlight tower.

Best way to spend a Saturday in the city:
There probably isn’t a better way to pass the day than biking the seawall around Stanley Park and False Creek. You get sunshine (hopefully), fresh air, people-watching, and all the sights. Walking along the shoreline between Locarno and Wreck beaches is another one.

Favourite Vancouver restaurant:
It’s hard to pick just one. I like the vegan options at Budgie’s Burritos, the dim sum at 3G Vegetarian Restaurant, and the veggie gravy at Fritz European Fry House.

Top insider tip for visitors:
Vancouverites are obsessed with the Grouse Grind, but you’re better off skipping this overcrowded and viewless stair-climber. For a better North Shore hiking experience, I’d recommend tackling the three peaks of Mount Seymour, heading to Norvan Falls in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, or getting up Mount Strachan in Cypress Provincial Park.

Agree with the Grouse Grind. It’s overrated
