Rain got you down? Get out of the cold and into a theatre! Fall is the season for Vancouver film festivals, and even though the Vancouver Asian Film Festival just ended, there are five more film fests coming up in November 2011, bringing an eclectic array of films from around the world to a cinema near you.
5 Vancouver Film Festivals in November / December 2011
1. Vancouver Serbian Film Festival November 9 – 12, 2011
Now in its fourth year, the VSFF showcases some of Serbia’s most talked-about movies. Featuring four films and three documentaries, this short fest happens at Denman Cinemas at 1770 Comox Street, Vancouver.
2. Vancouver Jewish Film Festival November 10 – 20, 2011
The annual VJFF is the longest running Jewish film festival in Canada. The VJFF brings contemporary Jewish films from around the world to Vancouver, and it’s free for youth under 25 (though if you’re over 18, you must pay the one-time $2 VJFF membership fee).
3. Amnesty International Film Festival November 17 – 20, 2011
Dedicated to showcasing independent films that bring human rights issues to light, the AIFF features 25 films, plus guest speakers, panel discussions, and action opportunities linked to the film topics. Hosted by SFU at the SFU Harbour Centre.
4. European Union Film Festival November 25 – December 8, 2011
“Europe without the jet lag” is the slogan for this annual film fest, which brings 24 films from 24 European countries to Vancouver’s Pacific Cinémathèque at 1131 Howe Street.
5. Whistler Film Fest November 30 – December 4, 2011
A Canadian film competition as well as festival, the 11th annual WFF screens 60+ films and awards up to $50,000 in prizes and commissions, including an audience award. WFF also includes industry panel discussions and an opening gala.
