Catch a classic: The Nutcracker by Goh Ballet Dec. 15-18

When The Nutcracker premiered in St. Petersburg in December 1892, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the audience was undecided. Today it’s a holiday classic and one of the most-performed ballets worldwide. Goh Ballet presents their version of The Nutcracker Dec. 15-18, at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts.

The Nutcracker performed by Goh Ballet

The internationally-known and Vancouver-based Goh Ballet debuted The Nutcracker in 2009 to a chorus of positive reviews. Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker has traditional elements as well as an avante garde edge. The ballet is choreographed by Anna-Marie Holmes, a former star dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and an award-winning choreographer known for her interpretations of Russian classics.

The performance features 200+ costumes and dramatic sets. In years past the show has wowed audiences with ballet plus extras: theatrics from a real magician, a dancing bear and agile gymnasts. Goh Company dances along to Tchaikovsky’s score performed live by members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra—one of only two professional opera orchestras in Canada.

The Goh Company was founded in in 1979, by principal dancers of The National Ballet of China, Lin Yee Goh and Choo Chiat Goh. The show is directed by Choo Chiat Goh and produced by his daughter, former prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Canada, Chan Hon Goh.
