Hometown: Saigon, Vietnam
How long have you been a Vancouverite? 20 years
Occupation:
I would probably categorize myself as a tinkerer more so than an entrepreneur. I founded my first company designing websites and building databases at the age of seventeen. After that, I built a coworking space, The Network Hub, with my two partners John Van (yes, my brother) and Jay Catalan. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, this is a creative collaborative workspace for entrepreneurs and freelancers that has been in use in the Lower Mainland since 2006. You literally form a network of coworkers since you are working in the same space as other people and sharing ideas, successes and challenges. I also started a marketing company called Urban Bella Marketing in that same year and have since left Urban Bella to my former partner in order to start a high tech company called SocialCheck.me.
Favourite Vancouver restaurant:
Favorite Vancouver restaurant is Phnom Penh – the chicken wings are well worth the long wait!
Best way to spend $50 in Vancouver:
Hot dogs from a street vendor plus the best beach mat that money can buy on Denman Street to use to hang out at English Bay. Is that $50 bucks yet?
Best place to take an out-of-town guest:
The Capilano Suspension Bridge, for sure! There’s something about walking on a swinging, creaky old suspension bridge with a 230 feet drop down to the river that excites everyone 100% of the time.
Favourite Vancouver memory:
My first experience on the ferris wheel at the PNE. I think it was the first time that I realized how beautiful Vancouver really is.
