When we got our dog 12 years ago we made the decision to include him in as many of our outings and holidays as possible. Over the years I’ve learned that “pet-friendly” means different things to different hotels, and some aren’t really all that friendly at all. While I appreciate the fact that more and more hotels and motels across Canada are now allowing pets, for some this acceptance is grudging at best.
At the other end of the spectrum you have hotels like the OPUS Hotel in Vancouver, that really do go out of their way to make your dog feel like a welcome guest. I had an opportunity to put this to the test recently, and my dog gave them two enthusiastic thumbs (dew claws) up.
First of all, the OPUS doesn’t charge extra for pets. Considering it’s quite common to charge $25 and up for pets, the OPUS no charge policy is a welcome surprise. Waiting for you when you check in is a water bowl and bag of treats for your pet, along with a copy of Modern Dog Magazine. Too busy to walk your dog? No problem – the OPUS staff will be happy to walk him for you. There is a park located just two blocks away from the hotel, and there are also several pet boutiques located nearby. Pet owners can stay in Deluxe Courtyard rooms, which provide an outdoor terrace so your furry friend can get some fresh air.
Located in trendy Yaletown, the OPUS has won a stack of awards, including the Readers’ Choice Awards and Best in Business Travel by Conde Nast Traveler (the only boutique hotel included in this list). Travel + Leisure also named OPUS one of the World’s 500 Best Hotels. Hundreds of glowing reviews have placed OPUS in the top 5 of Vancouver hotels on TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor also just named OPUS the 2012 #1 Trendiest Hotel in Canada, and #5 Trendiest Hotel in the World. Those are some respectable kudos.
