This Week’s Featured Vancouverite: Wayne Sych

Hometown: Edmonton, AB

How long have you been a Vancouverite: 38 years

Occupation:
I’m the Executive Chef at Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House, and was previously the former Executive Chef of The Cannery. I also teach cooking classes at the Cookshop.

Favourite Vancouver shops:
My Vancouver favourites have to do with food. I like going to all sorts of different shops and supermarkets to buy unique ingredients, such as Whole Foods, Granville Island Market, Fujiya and T & T Market. I then spend time in my kitchen at home preparing different dishes.

Favourite place in the city:
So many to choose from. On weekends, my wife and I enjoy taking our two sons to new places around the city. Most recently we went to Thomas Haas and the Bon Ton Bakery – two great patisseries/bakeries in Vancouver. We also like going for dim sum, Thai food, sushi, and all sorts of diverse cuisines.

Top insider tip for visitors:
Try not to stay downtown during your entire visit. Check out other neighbourhoods around the city, such as Commercial Drive and Main Street. You will most likely find small quaint shops, unique restaurants, artwork, bakeries, and more that you won’t find downtown. There are lots of hidden gems around the city.
