Vancouver Bar Photo contest: Win free dinners for a year

When I wrote recently on Vancouver’s favourite hotel bars, one name came up over and over again in comments: O’Doul’s – the jazz bar on Robson Street.

Sadly, O’Doul’s days are numbered.  After more than 40 years, the bar and restaurant are closing their doors at the stroke of midnight on June 2.  No more live jazz.  No more fancy little appies (What other bar serves smoked buffalo carpaccio?).  No more artsy refuge for hep cats on Robson.

But don’t despair yet.  To celebrate its long history, the bar (part of the Listel Hotel) is hosting a unique photo contest.  If you’ve taken a snapshot or two at O’Doul’s over the years, now’s the time to dig out those old photos.

From now through June 2, submit your best O’Doul’s photo to the O’Revoir O’Doul’s Photo Contest for a chance to win dinner for two, once every month for a year.

Dinners – in case you’re wondering – will be served at the still-to-be-named restaurant opening in O’Doul’s place later this summer (No details yet on the menu, but we do know the restaurant will be ultra sustainable and feature Chris Whittaker, the chef behind O’Doul’s).

So exactly what kind of photos are the judges looking for?  Each entry will be evaluated on its photographic merit but – just as importantly – on a short written description of why it’s meaningful to you.  The idea is to create a scrapbook of nearly a half-century of great memories at O’Doul’s, which will be organized into a Facebook photo album.

To submit, you can visit the O’Doul’s Facebook page and post a photo (or video, by the way).  Alternately, you can tweet your submission with the hashtag #ORevoirOdouls.  And – if you’ve got some old film prints hanging around – you can drop them off or mail them to O’Doul’s at 1300 Robson Street, Vancouver, BC, V6E 1C5.

The contest ends when O’Doul’s does – at 11:59 p.m. on June 2, 2012.  The winner will be announced on Facebook on June 4.

Anybody else sad to see O’Doul’s and its live music go?  What will you miss most?
