Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17, and there are lots of things to do in Vancouver to celebrate Dad, from taking him out for brunch or beers (or brunch with beers, if that’s how Dad rolls) to celebrating with the Whitecaps on Grouse Mountain or with the whole community at Vancouver’s Car-Free Festivals!
10 Things to Do on Father’s Day in Vancouver 2012
1. Join the Party at Vancouver’s Car-Free Festivals
June 17 is both Father’s Day and Car-Free Day, which means the whole family can celebrate with street-fair fun, games, food, and entertainment at any of the Vancouver Car-Free Festivals happening on Commercial Drive, Main Street, and in the West End.
2. Take Dad Fishing, Part I – The Luxe Version
Does Dad love to fish? Grab a group of six and take advantage of STS Guiding Services’ $560 Spring Sturgeon Special, which includes six hours of guided fishing, all tackle provided, and a private boat/guide. Find more guided fishing options here.
2.5 Take Dad Fishing, Part II – The Free Version
For family- and kid-friendly free fishing on Father’s Day, head to North Vancouver’s Rice Lake for Free Family Fishing Day (part of BC’s Family Fishing Weekend), which includes a free license, tackle, and wild salmon barbecue.
3. Pan for Gold at the Family Triple Blast Day at Britannia Mine Museum
The Britannia Mine Museum on the sea-to-sky highway has a Father’s Day event for the whole family: a Family Triple Blast Day that includes gold-panning races, a working blacksmith, face painting, and more.
4. Get Dad into the BC Sports Hall of Fame for Free
As long as Dad is accompanied by his son or daughter, his admission to the BC Sports Hall of Fame is free on Father’s Day! If Dad’s a sports fan, he’ll love exploring the exhibits, including the new Vancouver 2010 Gallery, and doing special Father’s Day activities like the Ultimate Dad’s Trivia Challenge and the Dad’s Day Dash.
5. Take Dad to Brunch
Yes, brunch is not just for Mother’s Day—dads love brunch, too! Some top options for Father’s Day Brunch in Vancouver: Father’s Day Brunch at the Pan Pacific Vancouver, three-course Father’s Day Brunch at MARKET by Jean Georges, Father’s Day Brunch at Altitudes Bistro.
6. Play Soccer with the Whitecaps at Father’s Day on Grouse Mountain
This is the one my partner would love: Meet and mingle with the Whitecaps FC women’s, Residency, and MLS teams atop Grouse Mountain to support the Whitecaps Foundation. There will be lots of soccer, plus lunch, a chance to do the Grouse Grind with some Whitecaps (or you can just ride up in the Skyride), photo ops, autographs, and more!
7. Go Macho at the Vancouver Men’s Show
Happening in Abbotsford June 15 – 17, the Vancouver Men’s Show is both a trade-show that showcases the latest in custom cars, power sports, motorcycles, hot rods, custom cycles, and hunting, fishing, and sporting goods, and a chance to see live-action entertainment, including Live Motocross Freestyle FMX, the Westcoast Freestyle Stunt Team, Big Country Customs Rock Crawl, and the BCEA Strong Man Competition. Proceeds benefit the BC Children’s Hospital.
8. Picnic in the Park or BBQ on the Beach
A great low-cost option for celebrating Father’s Day in Vancouver is to take advantage of our gorgeous outdoor spaces: BBQ on Spanish Banks, bring a picnic to Stanley Park then hit the Stanley Park Pitch & Putt, or check out the new food carts at Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park.
9. Swing Through the Trees: Monkido at Wildplay Element Parks
Take Dad on an outdoor adventure at a nearby Wildplay Element Park in Whistler, Nanaimo or Maple Ridge, where he can swing through the trees like a monkey (hence the name-play on “monkey do”) with Monkido, “a series of suspended obstacle games that increase in challenge, height, and fun across four Course Sections of ladders, cargo nets, rope swings, tightropes, swinging logs, wobbly bridges, and other aerial surprises.”
10. Buy Dad a Beer! (Sheesh, how many times does he have to ask?)
