Top 10 Canada Day 2012 Events in Vancouver
1. Canada Day on Granville Island
Possibly the most Canadian Canada Day in Vancouver, this annual celebration kicks off with the $8 Truly Canadian Pancake Breakfast followed by free events all day: an official Canada Day ceremony (with cake!), parade, MELA! Festival, live jazz from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and more.
2. Canada Day at Canada Place – Canada Day Parade & Waterfront Party
Canada Place is ground zero for downtown Vancouver’s Canada Day celebrations: The free Waterfront Party (with three entertainment stages) runs 10am – 6pm, followed by the 4th annual Canada Day Parade from 7pm – 8pm.
3. Canada Day Burrard Inlet Fireworks Show
Stick around Canada Place after the parade for Vancouver’s Canada Day fireworks, lighting up the sky over the Burrard Inlet from 10:30pm – 11pm.
4. Canada Day Block Party hosted by the Waldorf Hotel
The Waldorf Hotel’s first annual Canada Day Block Party includes nine food carts, live music, DJs, a carnival and a beer garden. The party is free and runs from noon – 6pm (so you can still make it to Canada Place for the 7pm parade).
5. Run Canada Day at Pacific Spirit Park
Another inaugural event, Run Canada Day features a 10k, a 5k and a Kids Run through beautiful Pacific Spirit Park (near UBC) followed by post-race refreshments and a Canada Day cake in Wesbrook Village.
6. Surrey Canada Day 2012 – Surrey
Western Canada’s largest Canada Day celebration happens in Surrey: a free all-day extravaganza of live music, amusement park rides, and the nighttime Fireworks Spectacular.
7. Steveston Salmon Festival – Richmond
Steveston has been cannily combining its July 1 celebrations with its annual Salmon Festival for 67 years. There’s a parade and live entertainment, but the real draw is their famous Salmon Barbeque, where 1200 pounds of wild salmon are devoured in honour of Canada Day.
8. Canada Day at the Burnaby Village Museum – Burnaby
The open-air Burnaby Village Museum hosts the officially Canada Day celebrations for the City of Burnaby. Admission is free and festivities include live music and entertainment, kids’ activities, a parade, and $2.30 rides on their famous Carousel.
9. Canada Day at Waterfront Park – North Vancouver
Just 15 minutes north of downtown Vancouver, North Van’s free Canada Day party features live music, multicultural dance, official Canada Day ceremonies, a bouncy castle for kids, and cupcakes.
10. Free Salsa in Robson Square
Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square, the annual series of free outdoor salsa dances/lessons, kicks off on Canada Day, July 1.
