Cycle Chic Social Celebrates Vancouver’s Fashionable Cyclists, June 29

With a nod of respect to Vancouver’s cycle commuters, racers, bmx’ers and dirt-jumpers, the folks behind Cycle Chic Social would like to call attention to the lesser known category of cyclists: the unhurried, fashionable set.

Copenhagen is known for its casual urban bikers who get around without 21 speeds or spandex. Vancouver too has a growing category of well-dressed “Slow Bicycle Movement” enthusiasts.

Meet and mingle with other design-savvy cyclists at Cycle Chic Social June 29, at 8pm, in the old Boneta Space. The event boasts a live fashion installation and bike demos by Fashionilla, Vancouver swimwear label Cuchè Bikinis, and Opus Bikes, among other local clothing and bike shops. Add nibbles by dessert ace Earnest Ice Cream, and the $12 tickets seem quite reasonable.

I’ve blogged about the 2-week Vancouver bike festival Velopalooza taking place June 15 to July 2. Cycle Chic Social is part of the ongoing ode to Vancouver’s bike culture. Inspired by the award-winning blog Copenhagen Cycle Chic and the Slow Bicycle Movement – which focuses on the journey, not the destination – Vancouver’s Cycle Chic Social shows locals all the ways to make a bike ride a relaxed and stylish way to get around.

Opus Bikes, Woah! Nellie Bikes, and Grass Frames will show off their vintage-inspired lines of cycles like Urbanista, which have retro frames made user-friendly by replacing old school steel with lightweight aluminum.

Fashionilla, a collective of emerging fashion designers, has put together a fashion installation with local-favourite Cuchè Bikinis, Bianca Barr (jewellery), Bhana Designs, and Gastown shops Rowan Sky (footwear), Neighbour and Dream Apparel. Attending designer Velo Tack is worth an extra mention; the artisan specializes in handmade, leather bicycle accoutrements.

If you haven’t yet tried Earnest Ice Cream, founders Erica and Ben established a rep about town with their small batches of decadent flavours like whiskey with butter salted hazelnut, rhubarb sorbet and vanilla malt. The ice cream comes in jars which they deliver on their trusty tricycle.

Cycle Chic Social, which also features drinks by Boneta,  DJ sets and art, takes place in the old Boneta space at 1 West Cordova on June 29. The event is preceded by a Velopalooza pre-party ride with the Bicycle Babes. Tickets are $12.
