Featured Vancouverite: Ada Bonini

Hometown: Originally North Vancouver, British Columba, but now South Granville in Vancouver is my hood.

How long have you been a Vancouverite? Counting North Vancouver and Vancouver, it’s going on 38 years.

Principal at Bob’s Your Uncle Design, an Interior Design Firm specializing in multi-unit residential design. I started the company about nine years ago with my business partner Cheryl Broadhead. We’ve been fortunate to work on some great projects, and I’m even more fortunate to have found a profession where I love what I do. Our website is www.byudesign.com.

Favourite Vancouver interior:
Wow, tough one! We have so many talented local designers, it’s hard to pick one, but if I must, I would say the Rennie Art Gallery in Chinatown. The restraint shown in design and the impeccable detailing is amazing. The modern feel is merged seamlessly with historical elements. If you’re ever lucky enough to be in their boardroom, it really is something to see. It’s the oldest schoolroom in Vancouver. You can find it on their website at www.renniecollection.org/gallery/wingsang.php.

Your best Vancouver haiku:
Why walk the seawall
When biking is much more fun
Except when it rains

Favourite Vancouver restaurant:
I’d be lying if I didn’t say Vij’s. If you haven’t tried their lamb popsicles, you’re missing out. Don’t be dissuaded by the long wait – go around the corner and get a drink while waiting, but definitely don’t give up! I’m lucky enough to live around the block. I think we are there at least once a month.

On the topic of designing homes, I’d love to see John Henshaw featured. (http://www.johnhenshawarchitect.com) He’s been in the industry for over 20 years and has worked on from commercial to residential projects. His designs are west coast inspired and loves the use how light plays such an important factor of each space. His work has been featured in Western Living and Canadian Builders Quarterly.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, Olivia! I’ll reach out to John this week and see if he’s game.
