The Special Vancouver Special!

What is people’s usual reaction when a Vancouver Special is mentioned? Animosity? Aversion? Or, an appreciation of the potential coolness in these houses? Join The Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s tour on Saturday, September 22nd and check out 5 re-imagined and renovated Specials, where the homeowners maximized their potential!

The well-built Specials are adaptable for so many uses – family, rental suite, trendy pad – all making the most of the clean lines and minimalist living offered by these houses. The houses on tour this year are a great selection demonstrating the integration of original Special features with modern Vancouver living.

This year’s one-day self-guided tour of 5 houses includes some with their original floor plans and others that have had radical makeovers! Get inside 5 special Specials. Be inspired and change your thinking about what a Vancouver Special can be.

What is a Vancouver Special?

Some say it derives from the “Rancher” turned sideways, to adapt to Vancouver’s narrow lots. Popular and quick to build, thousands of Vancouver Specials were constructed in the 1960s and 70s in bluecollar neighbourhoods all over the Lower Mainland, and have become a dominant house type in Vancouver. The sheer quantity of Specials and their adaptability to two family dwellings has made them very attractive to first time buyers. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is excited to see this stock gain respect and value, so Specials are retained and not sent to the landfill, since the highest volume of landfill today is coming from demolished buildings.
