Much fuss was raised three years ago when Canadian Jillian Harris played the starring role in The Bachelorette, the reality series where dozens of men compete for the heart of one lucky lady. When Jillian and co. swung by Vancouver for a romantic trip, it was the talk of the town and nearly front-page news.
Now we’ve really got something to talk about. Next week, The Bachelor Canada premieres – and it was all filmed right next door on Vancouver Island.
The Bachelor Canada is the new Canadian equivalent of the hit American reality show. The nine-episode series – featuring an all-Canadian cast – kicks off next Monday, Oct. 3, at 9 p.m. on Citytv.
The show is set on Vancouver Island’s Bear Mountain, outside of Victoria. For six weeks the bachelor and his female suitors will inhabit a 13,500-square-foot mansion once owned by ex-NHL star Len Barrie. The five-bedroom home includes a grotto spa (a la the Playboy Mansion), home theatre, infinity pool and basketball court, plus gorgeous views in all directions. Expect to see plenty of stunning footage of Vancouver Island, as the crew spent part of the summer getting aerial shots of the island’s coast and interior.
The star of the show is 28-year-old Brad Smith, a 6’1″, 185-pound former CFL wide receiver, who played with the Alouettes, Argonauts and Eskimos. Hailing from Hudson, Quebec, Smith was much too busy during his football career for serious romance. His bio explains:
After years as a professional athlete, which saw him living out of suitcases and moving to more than a dozen apartments in five years, Smith’s transient career has made it virtually impossible for him to focus on love and find the right woman with whom to settle down.
To Smith, “the most beautiful woman is someone who can feel good wearing a ponytail, sweatpants and a sweatshirt.” He’ll be seeking out his dream girl from a pool of 25 very qualified Canadians from across the country. The group, which ranges in age from 23-33, includes a pastor, a neuroscientist and even a Playboy model from North Vancouver, Melissa Marie. Marie explains, “I’m really excited to meet the bachelor, because I know he’s going to be hot.”
You can check out all the drama and romance starting Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. on Citytv.
