Burn those Thanksgiving Calories at the Turkey Trot 10K in Vancouver, October 8

Looking for a way to work off some Thanksgiving calories?  Put down that drumstick and head to Granville Island on Monday, Oct. 8, for the annual Turkey Trot 10K.

Now in its 14th year, the Turkey Trot is defined as a “run/walk/stroll.”  In other words, if you don’t feel like sprinting after a weekend of stuffing your face with pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes, then you don’t have to.  The unique race is equal parts competition and family get-together.  There’s even a special Tot Trot, where moms and dads can push junior in a stroller.

The Turky Trot route itself, which circles False Creek, seems more like sightseeing than road racing.  It starts on Granville Island, then loops over the Burrard Bridge to the northern side of False Creek.  Runners zip along the seawall, past Yaletown, the Plaza of Nations and Science World.  Then, they sprint back up the southern shore of False Creek, passing Olympic Village on their way back to Granville Island.  Included free of charge are some of the most beautiful views in the city.

And because it is Thanksgiving, the post race celebration features more than water, bananas and oranges.  According to the organizers, participants are treated to “gourmet food” while “enjoying the rockin’ reception from our house band.”   So you can immediately put back on the calories you just worked off.

Some 2,000 people turn out for the Turkey Trot ever year.  Appropriately enough, it’s a fundraising event for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

The race starts at 8:30 a.m. sharp on Thanksgiving morning, Monday, Oct. 8.  Online registration is $45 and ends Friday, Oct. 5.  You can also register in person on the morning of the race from 6:30 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. for $60.   Make sure to arrive early, since parking on Granville Island is a challenge even without thousands of turkey trotters.
