Found Footage Festival at the Rio Theatre Dec 4

The last time Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett came to Vancouver, an audience member donated something very special to their cause.

It was an old VHS tape called Hand Made Love.

Now, for many, such a “find” wouldn’t be a find at all. But, as they say, one man’s garbage is another man’s video treasure.

Since 1991, Prueher and Pickett have been collecting oddities from the Golden Age of Home Video. And for the past few years, they’ve taken their show on the road, screening clips of unbelievably chipper corporate training videos, hilariously executed exercise routines and outright oddities (like a demonstration on how to wash a ferret). On Dec 4, Prueher and Pickett bring the 6th edition of Found Footage Festival to Vancouver’s Rio Theatre.

The two began their weird hobby after they stumbled hobby after stumbling across a training video entitled, “Inside and Outside Custodial Duties” in a McDonald’s break room. Since then, they have compiled a trove of strange, weird, and silly videos.

Pickett and Prueher’s credits include the satirical news site The Onion and the Late Show with David Letterman, as well as a feature-length documentary, Dirty Country. The latter won the Audience Award at the South By Southwest Film Festival. This past August, they were guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Now in its sixth edition, Prueher and Pickett’s antique video roadshow regularly tours North America. They’ll be at the Rio (1660 E. Broadway) to introduce videos culled from Vol. 6, and to answer audience questions.

As for that Hand Made Love video—well, perhaps the less said, the better. Let’s just say the tape offers an earnest attempt at instructing viewers on privacy and self-pleasure.

The 19+ show is $12 advance/$15 at the door.
