Although he came to the public’s consciousness as a champion heavyweight boxer, Mike Tyson cemented himself as a pop cultural icon as a result of his behaviour outside the ring.  Well, mostly. Whether it’s his face tattoo, the time he bite Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight, or his cameo in the Hangover movies, there’s no question that Tyson has an everlasting presence. Now audiences across Canada can bask in that presence as he takes his one-man show on the road, including a stop in Vancouver on March 16 at the River Rock Casino Resort.

Undisputed Truth originally debuted on Broadway last year in New York, to critical acclaim and a sold out run. Directed by Spike Lee, the stripped down performance takes the audience deep inside the stories about the person once referred to as “The Baddest Man on the Planet.” Essentially, it’s a night of storytelling, with Tyson in the spotlight.

The boxing icon lets down his guard and takes the audience through his extreme ups and downs: his impoverished childhood, struggles with drugs, violence, prison and rehab. The tone can range from funny (the time he caught his estranged wife Robin Givens in the back seat of a car with a then unknown Brad Pitt) to baffling (the time he got a visit from Mrs. Brady herself, Florence Henderson, while he was in jail for a rape conviction).

Undisputed Truth is a must see for both die-hard boxing fans and those who can appreciate unique storytelling and a personality. Tyson’s certainly doesn’t lack in those areas. And as a result, this show has proved to be a knock-out.
