Do the names Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche and Rolls-Royce get your motor running?
Then you may be in luck. Luxury and Supercar Weekend is back in Vancouver for its fourth edition, Sept. 7-Sept. 8, bringing together Canada’s largest collection of high-end, high-performance cars.
The backdrop for this year’s show is VanDusen Botanical Garden, the manicured, 22-hectare oasis in the heart of the city. Dozens of rare and extraordinarily pricy automobiles will be parked on the garden’s Great Lawn, from the world’s greatest Ferraris to vintage Bentleys.
But the weekend is more than a car show. The organizers bill it as a garden party celebrating “the finer things in life.” There will be cocktails, wine and food on offer, with an emphasis on fine Italian cuisine. The event also features Vancouver’s largest outdoor fashion stage. Throughout the day, designers including Max Mara, Blubird and Gianni Maanaki will show off their lines, with leggy models parading around luxury vehicles.
But it’s the cars themselves that bring in the crowds. This year, the show has special displays in honour of the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini and the Porsche 911, as well as the 60th anniversary of Corvette. Showcases will also highlight traditional hot rods from the ’30s, military vehicles and muscle cars from the ’60s and ’70s.
Of course, the event is also equal parts competition. Vehicles on display are part of the prestigious Concours d’Elegance. The Concours dates back to 17th-century France, when the aristocracy would parade horse-drawn carriages through the parks of Paris. These days, judges scrutinize rare and high-end cars, handing out honours to the most exceptional vehicles in different classes. Categories this year range from vintage Aston Martins to German sports cars and even station wagons.
And, unlike your typical neighbourhood car show, Luxury and Supercar Weekend even has a dress code: “summer smart, elegant.”
Single day tickets to Luxury and Supercar Weekend, Sept. 7-Sept. 8, are $50. VIP tickets, including lunch and drinks, are $100. There’s also a special promotion: Stay at any one of 37 downtown hotels and you get two free one-day tickets.
