Friday September 13th

Vancouver Canucks Open Scrimmage, 9:00AM @ Rogers Arena, Vancouver

Hockey fans rejoice!  The Canucks are opening their building to fans for on-ice training camp sessions all weekend.  The scrimmage rosters (subject to change) include veterans Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Kevin Bieksa, Alex Burrows, Jason Garrison, and Ryan Kesler.  Pre-registration required.

FarmAde brings together people of all ages to celebrate community, local food and local Vancouver talent.  Check out the local bands; purchase farm-fresh corn and organic UBC Farm veggies; have a pint at the beverage garden, bring the kids for face painting, and go on a free tours of the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm.

Canada’s premier new music, art and technology festival takes over the city this weekend.  The festival will be educational and fun, with multiple interactive conferences and panel discussions, not to mention some serious booty-shaking evening engagements… something for design nerds, music historians and dance floor divas alike.  Buy the festival pass for entrance into all shows.

Vancouver Fringe Festival, time varies @ Granville Island, Vancouver

A celebration of theatre for all ages, featuring more than 600 performances by 89 artists, from Sept 5-15.  The Vancouver Fringe also features unique site-specific theatre where artists stage their work in the nooks and crannies of Granville Island, as part of the Fringe Onsite Program.  A lot happens at Fringe, so check the website for the full line up!

Accordion Noir Festival

Vancouver’s annual celebration of the world’s most misunderstood instrument!  Join the Accordion Noir Festival in celebrating the dark and edgy heart of today’s accordion music.  Raucous dance parties, eclectic concerts, and even a Grudge Match featuring other hated instruments!  Current and would-be squeezers are invited to take part in skill development workshops, open mics and the mildly frightening, but always entertaining Accordion Parade.

Over 50 tents filled with local products showcasing British Columbia’s bakers, artisans, and farmers.  A great evening for all ages, with food, fun, and festivities all night long.  Takes place every Thursday and Friday this summer.

13th Annual Richmond Night Market, 7:00PM-12:00AM @ 8351 River Road (next to Bridgeport Canada Line Station), Richmond

The market features 250 vendors and 80 food booths, family friendly entertainment, a children’s amusement zone, and carnival-style rides.  This year’s theme is based around the Magical Duck Island adventure board game, with $100,000 in prizes.  Open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday until October 14.

Adventure Challenge for Kids, 8:00AM-3:00PM @ Cultus Lake (3499 Columbia Valley Highway)

Adventure Challenge for Kids is the ultimate celebration of outdoor athleticism.  A multi-sport event that includes kayaking, cycling, and trail running, the Adventure Challenge for Kids will be a fun and exciting test of endurance and technical skills while travelling along one of two scenic routes.  The Fraser Valley event will be set in Cultus Lake Provincial Park. Participants will kayak the lake and road bike the paved park roads before running amongst old-growth giants on the Seven Sisters Trail.  Fundraising benefits Canucks for Kids Fun in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the 60 Minute Club.

The Vancouver Tweed Ride is a charity bicycle ride through the centre of Vancouver. Participants dress in traditional British cycling attire, particularly tweed!   The hope is to recreate the spirit of a bygone era, promote biking in urban areas and raise money and awareness for a local non-profit.  Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society.  Visit the website to register.
