Fancy a day in the country? Though Vancouver is a thriving metropolis, you don’t have to travel far to find country life – just to Southlands, a Vancouver neighbourhood known for its stables and equestrian community. This weekend, the 12th annual Southlands Country Fair means you can enjoy a day in the country with animals, games, pony rides, hay rides, and more – all without having to leave the city of Vancouver.
Southlands Country Fair began twelve years ago as a community event to showcase Southlands’ equestrian character. The event focuses on horses and a rural lifestyle and brings a taste of the country to the city. The fair is popular with families and kids of all ages and attracts thousands of people every year. The fair is held at Southlands Riding Club, a recreational and training facility for junior and amateur equestrians.
Activities at the Country Fair include pony rides, hay rides, a petting farm, horse entertainment by Southlands Riding Club members, a local arts and crafts market, a silent auction, a used book and toy sale, face painting, old fashioned games, a farmers market, and more. There will be a live performance by the Lollipop Girls, as well as an appearance by The Real Housewives of Vancouver‘s Robin Reichman.
Money raised at the Southlands Country Fair goes towards charities with a focus on bringing underprivileged children and horses together. This year, proceeds will go towards the Southlands Country Fair Summer Riding Program, the Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities, and Southlands Therapeutic Riding Society.
Entry to the fair is by donation. Some activities at the fair can cost $1-$5, though there are plenty of free activities too. The event is wheelchair accessible, dog friendly (though they must be on a leash) and will run rain or shine.
