Where To Get Local Apple Cider Near Vancouver

Vancouverites are in a great position to enjoy fresh-picked fruits and vegetables with so many homegrown options so close to town. Now that summer is over, juicy strawberries, tart raspberries, and sweet blueberries are gone for the season but lucky for us, apples are ripe for the picking and they’ll be a delicious way to tide us over until we are ready for the pumpkin patch October. Within an hour of Vancouver you can get your fill of apples, pick your own in an orchard, and sip apple cider at the Taves Family Farm Applebarn in Abbotsford.

The Applebarn

Taves Family Farm is home of The Applebarn and The Applebarn Pumpkin Patch, an ultimate destination for autumn activities and treats. This family-owned and operated farm is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year, boasting 10-12 acres of pumpkins and about 18 acres of apples.

They have a corn maze that is open now (mid September), the pumpkin patch opening soon (end of September), and a Country Store where you can pop in to pick up your seasonal essentials. While you’re on-site, enjoy the corn cannon, jumping pillow, petting barn and more (rates may apply for activities).

Apple Cider

You can purchase 1.89 L jugs of local apple cider in the The Applebarn’s Country Store (333 Gladwin Rd, Abbotsford, BC) along with various other apple products.

In the store they also have a window view down to the bottling line and a video about the apple cider process. It’s very informative and gives you an excuse to hang out even longer in the shop that bursts with an aroma of warm apple cider and cinnamon.

Across the Water

Starting out from Vancouver you can get quench your thirst for apple cider (the alcoholic variety) over on Vancouver Island. Two great options are Sea Cider in Saanichton via the Victoria/Swartz Bay ferry terminal and also Merridale Cidery at Cobble Hill, just south of the Duncan.

Sea Cider will be hosting an Apple Day Open House on Sunday, September 29th, 2013 and Merridale is open daily for tours and tastings, along with various special events throughout the year. Both offer a wide range of ciders made with their unique apple blends — grown right on the island — along with a bistro where you can pair your crisp, spirited ciders with a delicious lunch.
