If the autumn blues have you down, why not bring the entire family out to the Dunbar Village Harvest Festival? The annual street festival is happening this weekend on Saturday, September 28th from 11am-3pm. With games, live entertainment, workshops, art projects, and even a pancake breakfast, there’s sure to be something everyone in the entire family can enjoy.
The Festival is split into three areas, Dunbar Village North, Dunbar Village Centre, and Dunbar Village South. A free bus will be on hand to transport you and your family (including dogs!) to all the areas, and “passports” for collecting stamps from different stations means you’ll want to hit up all three areas. Read on to find out what’s happening in each area of the Festival.
Dunbar Village North (Between W 16th and 19th Ave)
If you’ve got a green thumb, or want to learn more about sustainable living, then be sure to check out Dunbar Village North. At the Sustainability Workshops & Demos in Dunbar Village North, you can learn how to make a winter/spring container garden, decrease your food waste, and even how to raise chickens in Vancouver. A Mobile Dairy Classroom will allow families to get up close with a milking cow and her calves, all while learning about the production of milk. Weather permitting, a “hay play” will also be available for kids.
Dunbar Village Centre (Between W 26th and 30th Ave)
In Dunbar Village Centre, the kids will have a ball with the bouncy castle, sumo bouts, carnival games, and community art project. Adults can keep busy too with a car show, BBQ, or booksale. As well, live music and entertainment at the Shoppers Stage (at Dunbar and 27th Ave) will be sure to keep the entire family on their feet. Performers include local children’s performer, Music with Marnie, Louisiana Zydeco Blues group Gary Comeau Duo, and cover band Rogue Messengers.
Dunbar Village South (Between W 39th and 41st Ave)
If your appetite is getting the best of you, then you’ll want to start your day off in Dunbar Village South, where a Pancake Breakfast will be held in the Marketplace IGA parking lot on 41st Ave. Between 9-11am, the first 500 people can fill up on pancakes or other healthy options. Breakfast is by donation, with the money going towards charity.
Also to be found in Dunbar Village South are a charity dog wash, circus workshops, fitness and health classes, and the Gratitude Graffiti Project. If you’re looking to work off those pancakes then try yoga, CrossFit, or martial arts at the fitness and health trial classes, then balance it off with juggling or stilt-walking at the all-ages circus workshops. At the Gratitude Graffiti Project, you can cultivate gratitude and joy in your life in a twenty-minute session.
