Flamenco Rosario brings the rhythm and song of flamenco to Vancouver with the 24th annual Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. The festival is a mixture of performances, demonstrations and workshops of both song and dance. National and local artists will perform a range of traditional to modern styles, in both solo and ensemble performances. This year, the festival will feature award-winning performer Olga Pericet from Madrid, Spain.

In case you’re unfamiliar with flamenco, the Spanish art form is a highly expressive dance form that combines dance, guitar playing, and singing. Hand-clapping, sweeping arm movements, and percussive feet stomping characterize the dance that is also known for its vibrant and eye-catching costumes. Flamenco comes from the Andalusia region of Spain, but also has roots in East Indian, Persian, Roma, Sephardic Jewish and Middle Eastern cultures. With a universal message of inclusion, the dance form has grown in popularity all over the world. Flamenco Rosario believes flamenco’s emergence from diverse cultures and its inclusiveness are the reasons the art form thrives and remains relevant in today’s global society.

The week-and-a-half-long festival will take place at several venues across Vancouver. The festival, which began as a single evening in 1990, has grown into Western Canada’s premiere flamenco event. The festival takes audiences and participants alike in a journey through flamenco’s origins in various cultures to its continuing evolution in music, song, and dance.
