Ring in the holiday season with the 10th annual Rogers Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, December 1st. Each year, 300,000 people turn out to see over sixty-five festival floats, marching bands, choirs, and community groups. The parade takes place in downtown Vancouver with over 3,500 participants and 300 volunteers. In addition to the parade, you can also bring the kids to meet Santa and enjoy some pre-parade fun.
The parade begins at 1pm. Beginning at Georgia St and Broughton St, the parade will travel east down Georgia, turn south on Howe St, and finish at Howe and Davie St. With such a long parade route, you can watch at any point along the route. Be sure to dress warm and bring some rain gear just in case!
If you would like to get a head start on the festivities, there are also a number of activities before the parade. From 10:30am-1pm you can find the Coast Capital Savings Christmas Square at the corner of Georgia and Howe. Pre-parade activities include letter writing to Santa, gingerbread man decorating, face painting, balloon twisting, and Christmas tree ornament decorating. There will also be live entertainment by Perry Ehrlich’s ShowStoppers, Vancouver Tap Dance Society, Marika, and FRESHH. After the parade, kids can also get their photo taken with Santa at the Robson Square Ice Rink.
The Santa Claus Parade is also one of the largest fundraising events for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Spectators are encouraged to bring food or monetary donations that can be collected on parade day. Volunteers in yellow ponchos will be collecting donations during the parade, or you can drop off your donation at the Coast Capital Savings Christmas Square, at the corner of Georgia and Howe. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank can purchase $3 worth of food. Since 2004, the parade has brought in $110,000 and more than 67,380 lbs of food for families in need in the Lower Mainland.
