It’s the Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos at this year’s NFL Super Bowl XLVIII (that’s 48 if you don’t feel like deciphering Roman numerals). Although Vancouver of course has its beloved B.C. Lions CFL football franchise, having a Super Bowl contender from just a couple hours’ drive south of the border is vicariously exciting, if nothing else.
So you can bet local sports fans will be heading out to get their beer on Feb. 2. We did a scouring of the Interwebs to find some Super Bowl viewing options, and came up with these. Note: kick-off time is 3:30 p.m. PST, the game is in New Jersey (if Chris Christie allows it) and this year’s half-time show stars Bruno Mars. Apparently Mars has also “personally invited” the Red Hot Chili Peppers along for the ride. Sunday Superbowl BBQ Extravaganza!! (Biltmore Cabaret, 2755 Prince Edward) – The live music venue hosts a Super Bowl party that includes (free!) BBQ food and drink specials. The game will be shown on the big screen in front of the stage. Free.
Super Bowl Sunday at Portside Pub (7 Alexander St.) – A craft beer pub with a nautical theme, this Gastown favourite is holding a pig roast, offering beer and drink specials, giving away door prizes and holding a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. The afternoon also includes a half-time burlesque dance performance and pre- and post-game DJ sets. Presented by the Sauder UBC M.B.Eh hockey team all proceeds go to support UBC M.B.Eh at the Harvard University McArthur Cup Hockey Tournament in Boston, MA. Visit the event page here to book a table or donate to the silent auction.
Super Sunday Forty Eight (The Imperial, 319 Main St.) – This refurbished Main Street theatre is promising a complimentary welcome cocktail, “all-American fare” and your own “personal leather sofa” from which to watch the game. At $55 per ticket, that must be some sofa – and some cocktail.
Super Bowl at the Shark Club (180 W. Georgia St.) – Twenty bucks gets you a bucket of Bud at this classy joint, located near Rogers Arena and BC Place – the heart of sports nuttiness in Vancouver.
Doolin’s Irish Pub (654 Nelson St.) – Celebrate upstairs or down or both at Doolin’s and its downstairs bar, The Cellar (1006 Granville St.). Not only are these downtown watering holes giving away two 50″ flatscreen TVs, but they are promising drink specials and “TOPLESS Girls.”
Super Bowl at the Charles Bar (136 West Cordova) – Guest hosts, drink specials, and halftime games for prizes, brought to you by the sports bar in the Woodwards Building.
Rio Theatre – As usual, this East Van theatre is putting on a party with all the trimmings, including a 50/50 draw, a raffle, door prizes, drink specials, a shooter girl, and a half-time burlesque show. A $5 donation at the door is requested, with partial proceeds going to local charity Canuck Place. *19+ only with bar service; 2 pieces of ID required.
Relish Gastropub and Bar (888 Nelson St.) – Another TV giveaway, this one of a 42″ TV. Also, you can indulge in lots of drink specials – including the serious sounding $2.50 shots of Fireball. Apparently this one sells out every year, so call 604-669-1962 to make reservations.
The Storm Crow Tavern (1305 Commercial Dr.) – Okay, we’re being a little facetious here – but only a little. The Storm Crow Tavern is Vancouver’s premiere geek bar – its walls are adorned with props and signed photos from science fiction and fantasy movies and TV shows, and there’s a whole section devoted to board games. Most likely, the joint’s one TV will be tuned not to the Super Bowl but to the first Terminator movie or Logan’s Run. In other words, it’s a place to escape – not celebrate – the madness of Super Bowl Sunday.
