Where to watch the Academy Awards in Vancouver

Want to party like Leonardo DiCaptrio in The Wolf of Wall Street? Vancouver offers a few options this year for viewing the 86th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday (March 2).

And the winner is…

The Morrissey (1227 Granville St.) – This downtown pub is hosting its 3rd Annual Oscars gala to benefit VOKRA (Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association). Local comic Morgan Brayton hosts an evening that includes Oscar-themed appetizers and a live auction. Doors open at 3:30. The Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) – The East Van theatre is encouraging movie fans to put on the ritz. Dress in your finest acceptance speech apparel and have your photo taken on the theatre’s red carpet. Contests include Oscar trivia, Best Costume, and Best Acceptance Speech. Plus, there’s a special Prize for the movie nerd who correctly picks the top six Oscar categories (Actor, Actress, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Picture). Doors 4 p.m. Free admission. 19+ only with bar service; two pieces of ID required.

Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.) – Another big-screen presentation of the big-screen awards. Vancity Theatre’s Raincity Oscar Party includes a red carpet, a welcome cocktail, hors d’oeuvres, an Oscar pool, prizes, a DJ, and host Thor Diakow (WE Vancouver film reviewer and Breakfast TV personality). Red Carpet pre-show: 3:30 p.m. Tickets: $35 at tickets.viff.org.

Cinema Public House (901 Granville St.) – Comedian Dino Archie (Simply Dope Comedy) and actor Jamie Callica (Almost Human) host a party that includes a three-course dinner, Thienot Champagne and Oscar-inspired cocktails. Queen Elizabeth Theatre Salon (630 Hamilton St.) – Local non-profit filmmakers organization Cineworks presents this high-end affair, which includes dinner catered by Espana Restaurant, an Oscar cocktail and comedic commentary by Paul Anthony of local monthly live variety show Talent Time. Up for grabs: a pair of diamond earrings. Cocktails and red carpet screening: 4 – 5 p.m. Tickets are $125 at BrownPaper Tickets.
