Vancouver Pro Musica presents the Sonic Boom Music Festival, a five-day event celebrating the classical music of BC composers. From March 26th – 30th, contemporary classical music will be showcased in concerts, workshops, lectures, panel discussions, and a Master Class for student composers. Sonic Boom Music Festival highlights new compositional works from BC composers with performances by some of the best musicians in Vancouver. This year’s festival showcases new works by thirty-nine composers.

Sonic Boom 2014 features John Oliver, the Erato Ensemble, and Heidi Krutzen. John Oliver is a composer, guitarist, and electronic musician. Born and raised in Vancouver, Oliver writes opera, orchestral, chamber and electroacoustic music. Oliver also conducts and performs contemporary music as a guitarist, appearing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and various chamber music groups. Erato Ensemble is a Vancouver-based art song chamber collective. Their mission is to preserve the art-song tradition while creating new works in the genre by mixing solo vocal music with unique instrumentation. Erato features some of Vancouver’s leading musicians, including members of the Vancouver Symphony, Vancouver Chamber Choir, and UBC and VSO faculty, among others. Heidi Krutzen is a harpist who is known for her solo, chamber music, and orchestral performances. Celebrated for both her performances and her collaborations with composers, she has emerged as a leading musician in Canada.

The Pro Musica Society of Vancouver, or Vancouver Pro Musica, is a non-profit, volunteer-run organisation of BC composers. Founded in 1984, the organisation is dedicated to the presentation and promotion of new works by BC composers. Their goal is to create a strong, vibrant musical community in British Columbia. Through concerts, workshops, educational initiatives, multicultural partnerships, and events such as the Sonic Boom Music Festival, Vancouver Pro Musica fosters and enriches the music of BC.
