The 9th Annual Vancouver International Burlesque Festival is heading our way, with guests ranging from the woman crowned Miss Nude Universe two years running in the 1970s to the current King of Burlesque.
The three-night event (May 1-3) features a different lineup of local and international burlesque talent, live music and variety artists each night.
This year, guests include burlesque legend Kitten Natividad. The VIBF’s guest of honour, Natividad was Miss Nude Universe for both 1973 and 1974 and holds international cult status as a star of Russ Meyer’s 1979 film Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra-Vixens. Chicago’s Ray Gunn, who holds the current title of King of Burlesque from the Burlesque Hall of Fame’s annual Tournament of Tease in Las Vegas, will also perform.
Special guest Perle Noire has been called the “Feminine Phenomenon” and gained international notoriety touring with renowned burlesque star Dita Von Tease as part of her Strip-Strip Hooray tour.
Other guests include Canadian Burlesque legend Judith Stein, from Nelson B.C., and Suzzette Monique, who began dancing in Vancouver in 1969. And boy, are her legs tired! (Sorry.)
Since its inauguration, the VIBF has grown to enjoy attendance higher that that of similar events in cities such as Chicago, London, and New York, cities where they obviously don’t appreciate the art of the tease. And Vancouver burlesque performers have been recognized worldwide. The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas has just announced their selections for this year’s world title competition, Miss Exotic World – Reigning Queen of Burlesque (to be held June 3 at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas) and, of only ten women selected world-wide, four Vancouver burlesque stars are on the list, including April O’Peel, Burgundy Brixx, Lola Frost and Melody Mangler. All four will appear on various nights at this year’s VIBF.
You can see a full lineup of performers and a schedule here. All events are at the Vogue Theatre (918 Granville Street). Tickets are at northerntickets.com. Individual nights are $32-$41, three-night festival passes are $84.
