Tribute bands raise money for animals this Saturday

3 Inches of Blood

3 Inches of Blood and friends.

At first, you might not expect musicians who play in bands with names like Cooked and Eaten and Rotting Hills to be concerned about the furry beings who live among us.

Yet members of Vancouver’s hard rock and heavy metal community are coming together to aid in some planned pregnancy amongst the city’s four-legged types. These critter-conscious musicians are recombining into tribute groups to cover songs by metal faves like Rush, Sepultura and Thin Lizzy.

The second annual event is this Saturday night at the Rickshaw Theatre (254 E. Hastings) and will raise money for Neüterhead: Ace of Spays, a non-profit that assists rescue groups with the costs of spaying and neutering animals in their care. There are also prizes.

The bands include Xanadudes, a salute to Rush and which features members of 3 Inches of Blood and All State Champion. Thin Gordie is a tribute to Irish ’70s hard-rock band Thin Lizzy and features members of Anciients, Erosion, Cooked and Eaten and Rotting Hills.

RC Guns, meanwhile, will team up with musicians in 3 Inches of Blood and The Devil is Real to salute the raucous performance art punk band The Plasmatics. Troops of Doom plays Sepultura covers and includes folks from the bands Gross Misconduct, Fallen Decade, Explain and 88 Mile Trip.

Prizes include a one-hour tattoo session, rehearsal studio and restaurant gift cards, art prints, and of course a gift basket from a local coffeehouse – because a caffeinated heavy metal fan is a happy heavy metal fan.
