Release the dachshunds! This weekend at Hastings Racecourse, the track is going to the dogs during the annual Wiener Dog Races being held this Saturday, July 12th and Sunday, July 13th.
The highlight of any dog-lover’s summer, Vancouver wiener dog races are a spectacle and the must-see event of July. Taking place over several heats, these dogs are racing to get their owners $2,500 in prizes. Hopefully some of which will include dog toys and treats.
Entrance to the wiener dog races is completely free. If you’ve never been to Hastings Racecourse this is also a great way to introduce yourself to the world of horse racing. It’s kind of confusing, kind of addicting, and a little bit more exciting than the dog races (but, just a little bit!) Regular horse races occur in between the wiener dog races, to give their little legs a chance to rest. If you’re the betting type, thrown down a twoonie on a horse that has the best name. Or, just make play-bets with your friends.
But never mind the big guys, this weekend it’s all about the wiener dogs! Races start at 1:50pm on July 12 and 13th, and go on in heats throughout the day. The final deciding match will be held on Sunday.
