Scandinavia in Vancouver

It’s the time of year for beaches, popsicles, fresh cherries, and the summer feature embraced by all: vacation time.

For some, this means assembling travel essentials of an exotic nature like passports, water purification tablets and translator apps. Upcoming 5am wake up calls sing in the distance with sweet promises of crowded airports and jetlag.

The target is Scandinavia for a plate of Swedish pancakes and a side of fresh air. Luckily, locals and visitors alike are able to incorporate the beauty of Nordic life while sampling our fair city of Vancouver, jetlag-free.

Open 6 days a week, this non-profit community centre helps to unify a range of local and visiting Scandinavians in an effort to preserve and promote Nordic culture. The centre is also open to those with an appreciation for all things Scandinavian. Events and offerings include language classes, dance lessons, craft fairs, and a host of celebrations like the Leif Erikson Festival in October and the celebrated Midsummer Festival in June.

While summer talk around the water cooler often consists of sports and gardening, this event will help to provide fodder for more intriguing weekend plans. Given a choice of fertilizer and lawn mowers, or participation in a Viking raid and a troll forest, the choice is clear. Festival volunteers are always welcome, and every year sees a call for crafters, along with participants for the wife-carrying contest (incentive: the winner takes home the Carlsberg Cup and the wife’s weight in beer).
