It’s a great time to be a shopper in Vancouver. Retailers from around the world are scheduled to open new flagships stores in the city in the coming months and years. New malls are under construction and old ones are under renovation.
Here’s a quick look at some of the upcoming changes in Vancouver’s retail landscape:
Park Royal Mall Redevelopment: The venerable North Shore mall is in the midst of a $150-million improvement and expansion project that will add an additional 300,000 square feet of retail space. New tenants like Anthropologie and Zara will soon be joined by Vancouver’s first La Maison Simons. The Quebec-based specialty fashion retailer is slated to open a 100,000-square-foot store in 2015.
McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport: By next spring, Vancouver will have its very own 80-unit outlet mall. Conveniently situated next to the airport, at the Templeton SkyTrain Station in Richmond, the high-end mall will feature brands including Prada, Armani and Burberry.
Oakridge Centre Redevelopment: The 1959 mall on the Cambie Street corridor is readying for a massive $1.5-billion expansion, with the first phase set to be completed in 2019. Plans call for a total of 1.4-million square feet of retail space, along with 2.7-million square feet of neighbouring residential space in multiple towers up to 44 storeys high. Existing anchor tenant Hudson’s Bay will be joined by a Target store and another unnamed anchor tenant.
Nordstrom: Renovations of downtown’s old Sears store on Granville Street are moving along briskly. Luxury fashion retailer Nordstrom is planning to open the doors on its new 230,000-square foot store on September 18, 2015.
Saks Fifth Avenue: Saks, now owned by the Hudson’s Bay Co., had initially planned to open its first Vancouver store in late 2014. But plans now call for the unveiling of its first two Canadian stores in Toronto in 2015. No word yet on exactly when or where Saks might pop up in Vancouver.
Versace Home: Canada’s first Versace Home flagship store – carrying furniture as well as fixtures, wallpaper and textiles – is scheduled to open in Gastown some time this fall. The 2,000-square-foot store will be located at 310 West Cordova St.
