At some point in December the Christmas kitsch can start to get to you. You can either bemoan it or embrace it—and the latter is much more fun.

So dig out your best, most gaudy Christmas sweater, and get ready to run! Or dance– whichever you prefer.

Promising “the most fun you can have with your knitwear on”, the Ugly Christmas Sweater Dash takes place on Saturday, December 13.  (Full disclosure: it also promises to be “the hottest and itchiest 5K ever”.)

The family-friendly event is an untimed five-kilometre run that starts at Olympic Village Square on Southeast False Creek at 11 a.m. Runners wear their spandex along with their tackiest holiday sweaters. Those registered gets a brand new ugly toque to complete the ensemble and ward off the chill in style.

Along the course, participants can expect holiday-themed stations, hot chocolate, and snow blowers. When they’re done, there are prizes for the Ugliest Christmas Sweater, Most Original Ugly Christmas Sweater, Best Group Costume, and more.

Registration costs $45 per person or $10 for kids 8 and under. The event is organized by the Now That’s Ugly Society, a not-for-profit organization based in Port Moody, B.C., that raises money for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. All the proceeds from online team fundraising go to the charity.

If you’re looking for more adult-oriented fun in an appliqué sweater, the Very VCBC Non-Denominational Holiday Beer Festival happens this Friday, December 5.

And, you’ll want to get your tickets early for the world’s largest original Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, which takes place on December 19 and sells out every year.

Now in its 13th year, the party fills the Commodore Ballroom with revellers proudly dressed in acrylic. It starts at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $45 each.

And remember: more is always better when it comes to reindeer embellishment.
