50 Shades of Grey, the movie based on the best-selling novel that spiced up bedrooms around the world, hits theatres this Feb. 13, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

But if you’re looking to get in the mood before then, there’s Taboo Vancouver, the “naughty but nice” expo at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Jan. 22-Jan. 25.

This 19-plus show, which is now in its 14th year in Vancouver, describes itself as an “upscale adult playground dedicated to enhancing lifestyles [and] encouraging romance, personal betterment and all things taboo.”  Well, then.

The expo features a full weekend of live entertainment, plus informative seminars and nearly 100 booths offering the finest in “shopping, fashion and sexccessories.”

Highlights on the Main Stage this year include the Miss Pole Dance Taboo competition, organized by Vancouver’s own Tantra Fitness, a workout studio dedicated to the art of exotic dancing. To balance the scales, there’s also an All Male Revue by aptly named Body Heat Canada. Other offerings include burlesque shows and an array of risque circus routines.

Meanwhile, an extensive series of seminars offers couples insight into those burning questions. Toronto-based sexologist Dr. Jess will be on hand through the weekend, delving into all kinds of topics with “her gentle humour, thorough subject knowledge and friendly disposition.” She’s offering a half-dozen different seminars, none of which I can describe here.

Stars of the adult-themed reality TV series Swing will also be volunteering their expertise in a series of seminars, ranging from “Romancing your Bedroom” to significantly racier topics. Suffice it to say that Fans of the Fifty Shades of Grey series will certainly get their money’s worth at these in-depth sessions.

In addition, guests can wander through a maze of booths showcasing all kinds of racy apparel, accessories, books, beauty treatments and services.

The Taboo Naughty But Nice Show is Jan. 22-Jan. 25 in the Vancouver Convention Centre West’s Hall A.  Tickets are $15 online or $20 at the door.  No one under the age of 19 will be admitted.
