Think Pride is just a parade? Not by a long shot.

The Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival returns to the city, July 25-Aug. 2. Apart from the giant parade on Aug. 2 (which attracts more than 650,000 spectators), this year’s festival includes a full lineup of outdoor events, street parties, dinners and club nights and even a celebration on Sunset Beach.

Ready for a 10K with a twist? The festival kicks off with the annual Pride Run and Walk through Stanley Park on Saturday, July 25. Runners (many in costume) compete on a course through the park’s trails and seawalls, hydrating at special disco water stations en route. There’s also a 5K walking option. Afterward, focus shifts to Picnic in the Park, a family-friendly afternoon of summer games – think tug-of-war, volleyball and a special “drag” race – plus music by local DJs.

Vancouver-Pride-ParadeThe festival takes to the streets the following week at the Davie Street Block Party, Saturday, Aug. 1.  Three blocks of Davie Street in downtown Vancouver are closed to traffic for one night and transformed into an outdoor dance party.  Beer gardens, DJs and unique carnival games (human foosball, anyone?) draw big crowds for a night of dancing in the streets. The party continues after-hours at clubs and bars along the strip.

Save some energy for the big 2015 Vancouver Pride Parade the next day, starting at noon sharp on Sunday, Aug. 2. Crowds pack the parade route – starting on Robson Street, then continuing along Denman into the West End – to cheer on more than 100 themed floats and thousands of dancers and participants. This year’s theme of Gender Super Heroes is sure to inspire some over-the-top costumes and wildly creative sets. Get ready for a visual overload of rainbow flags, confetti, glitter and sequins.

After the parade, the party continues on the beach at the Pride Festival @ Sunset Beach, Sunday, Aug. 2. An estimated 150,000 partiers are expected to pack the beach along False Creek for an afternoon of hot dance music, sunshine and ocean vistas. This year’s festival also features a beer garden, full lineup of food trucks and a busy marketplace for clothing and crafts.

Looking for more parties? These are just a few of the offerings at this year’s Pride Festival. Other popular events include breakfasts, barbecues, comedy shows, cabaret-style dinners, and after-parties. For the full lineup, check out the Vancouver Pride website.
