Following an unusually hot summer, the grape harvest is well underway in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley. You don’t need to head inland to get a taste of the region, however. Next Wednesday (September 16), there’s a chance to swirl over 350 wines from 90 B.C. wineries at the Vancouver Convention Centre East.

The ChefMeetsBCGrape event is an annual fundraiser for the Arts Club Theatre Company, which plans to open a new venue in Olympic Village this year. It’s organized in conjunction with the Wines of British Columbia to showcase the province’s new fall releases.

The lively walk-around tasting features wines from different growing regions in B.C., including the  Okanagan, Similkameen, and Fraser valleys as well as the coastal Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island.

Food and wine go hand in hand, so chefs from a dozen restaurants will be offering small plates to go along  with the wine. They’ll be competing to make the best pairing with locally sourced ingredients.

For example, La Pentola, which specializes in northern Italian cuisine, will be offering burrata cheese with grilled peaches, crispy speck, sungold tomatoes, basil semi-gel, and pickled mustard seeds.

That luscious plate will be paired with Maverick Estate Winery Sauvignon Blanc from the Okanagan Valley.

Chefs from Oru Cuisine at the Fairmont Pacific Rim will be presenting cured trout with crème fraiche, candied fennel, smoked trout roe, caper berries, and pommes gaufrettes.

Moraine Estate’s Viognier 2014 will accompany the trout. The latter is a family-owned winery in Naramata.

Lift Bar Grill View will also be featuring fish from local waters in its plate of beet juice-cured salmon gravlax with pickled candy cane beets and foraged BC mushrooms.

Haywire’s non-vintage “The Bub” from Okanagan Crush Pad will add some sparkle to the party with the gravlax.

You can peruse a full list of participating restaurants and wineries at the Arts Club website, where you can also buy tickets. They go for $90 each, and proceeds will benefit the theatre company in supporting the creation of new works by B.C. playwrights.

Tickets are also available by phone at 604-687-1644.

  1. I love that we here in Vancouver live so close to such a great wine area! It is amazing how much BC wines grow in popularity even outside of BC, great to see!!
