Having trouble getting out of bed during these dark January mornings? This may be the event for you.
Start your day by shaking your thing with 200 other Vancouverites at a unique pre-work dance party near downtown’s Olympic Village neighbourhood. Groove to a live DJ, stretch with trained yoga instructors and even get a free mini-massage … before you ever step foot in the office.
It’s all part of Wake n Shake, Jan. 29 at the Beaumont Studios, a collective of artists studios just blocks from the Olympic Village SkyTrain Station. This is the second instalment of the event, which debuted over the summer and attracted more than 100 participants.
For early risers, things kick off at 6:15 a.m. sharp with an optional pre-dawn yoga session. Some of Vancouver’s top instructors will be guiding groups through a series of poses accessible to all levels.
Then the real fun starts. At 7 a.m. sharp, the event turns into a dance party, with DJs spinning tropical house music. Live performers and dance instructors weave throughout the crowd, offering encouragement and a few pointers to dancers.
The result is a quasi-club vibe, but with a decidedly healthy twist. Dancers can schedule five-minute mini massages with a registered massage therapist on-site, or have a consultation with a naturopath. There’s healthy food and snacks, too, including tea, coffee, juice and organic goodies. The event winds down around 8:40 a.m., leaving dancers just enough time to get to the office – charged up and ready to start the day.
Organizers are hoping the event is not just an excuse to get out of bed early but a way to build health and wellness in the community and also encourage people to get out and socialize with their neighbours.
