Vancouver Screen Scene: From Arrow and the Flash to Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is only one of several superhero TV series shooting in Vancouver.

Get ready for it: Vancouver’s about to be hit by a ton of superheroes (and the stars who play them).

At one time, Vancouver was a hot bed for sci-fi series, such as Stargate, Sanctuary, and Continuum. While sci-fi productions are still aplenty in the city, superheroes are the specialty du jour—and that’s particularly true starting this month.

There’ll be plenty of high-powered action, dramatic scenes, and star sightings as several TV series launch into production on their latest seasons.

First up, Arrow starts shooting (pardon the pun) Season 5 on July 5 and continues until April 19, 2017.

Based on the DC Comics crime-fighter Green Arrow, the series stars Stephen Amell as billionaire playboy Oliver Queen.

Last season saw Oliver and his allies fighting the terrorist organization H.I.V.E., led by Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough).

In Season 5, there’ll be a few new regular faces to look forward to.

Josh Segarra

Josh Segarra (Chicago P.D.) will debut as district attorney Adrian Chase, who helps Oliver clean up the city via the legal system and who has his own masked alter-ego: Vigilante.

Meanwhile, Rick Gonzales will also join the cast and portray the reckless and cocky vigilante Wild Dog, who helps out Team Arrow.

Chad L. Coleman

On the flip side, Chad L. Coleman (The Wire, The Walking Dead) will take on the role of the villainous gangster Tobias Church.

A few days later, The Flash is slated to start production on Season 3, on July 7. Shooting continues until April 22, 2017, so there’s plenty of time to try and catch sight of this speedster, no matter how slow you are.

Grant Gustin stars as The Flash

Grant Gustin returns to his role as Barry Allen, who is also the Flash.

Season 3 is rumoured to be casting a new smart and intuitive series regular who will be slightly older and slightly nerdier than Barry, and who will set out to find out the truth about Barry’s secrets, even as he tries to hide his own.

Hmm, you’ll have to tune in to see who is the answer to that riddle.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

Later on, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow kicks off production for Season 2 on July 18, continuing until January 10, 2017.

Maisie Richardson-Sellers will play Vixen on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

While the team lost both Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (The Originals, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) joins the cast as Amaya Jiwe, or Vixen, who channels the powers of animals.

(This character is the granddaughter of Megalyn Echikunwoke’s Mari McCabe version on Arrow.)

Nick Zano will portray Dr. Heywood (who is also Citizen Steel)

The Justice Society of America will also be introduced in Season 2, with Nick Zano playing Dr. Nate Heywood (whose alter-ego is Citizen Steel in the comics).

Melissa Benoist stars as Supergirl

As we previously mentioned, Vancouver saved Supergirl from cancellation and the relocated production takes off for Season 2 on July 25 and continues until May 1, 2017.

While Melissa Benoist reprises her lead role, guess who else is going to be on the show?

Wonder Woman, believe it or not.

Well, not the character but rather, Lynda Carter, who portrayed Wonder Woman on the 1970s TV series.

Lynda Carter will appear on Supergirl

Lynda Carter for president!

Carter will be filling the role of the U.S. president on Supergirl.

With that news impossible to top, that’s it for this round of the city’s superhero scene.

Stay tuned for more on the way though, as with this many superheroes in the city, you can be sure there’ll be plenty more action to report on.
